However you want to travel to Lake Constance – each option has its own special charm. We recommend travelling by public transport such as train and bus: this way you can enjoy the lake and alpine panorama quite comfortably and at the same time make a valuable contribution to protecting and preserving the beautiful nature of the region.
By train: traffic jam-free and environmentally friendly
There are direct rail connections to Lake Constance from many cities in the DACH region. From Germany, you can reach the region via Karlsruhe, Munich and Stuttgart. The Swiss Federal Railway brings travellers from Switzerland to Zurich or Basel. If you travel with the Austrian State Railways, you will reach your destination via Bregenz.
By car: Flexible at Lake Constance
If you want to travel individually and remain as flexible as possible, you can travel by car. From the German side, in addition to the two main traffic arteries A81 and A96, other federal roads lead to the lake. The B31 connects practically the entire German shore of Lake Constance from Bodman-Ludwigshafen to Lindau.
From Austria, the A14 leads directly to Bregenz, while on the Swiss side you can reach your destination either on the A1, A4, A7 or A13. The latter is the equivalent of the German B31, if you will, in that it runs parallel to the shore of Lake Constance from the canton of St. Gallen in the east to Schaffhausen.
By bus: cheap and flexible
Buses are a comfortable way to travel flexibly in a group. Modern variants offer numerous extras and can carry 70 or more passengers. Thanks to today’s common design as high decks, passengers have better visibility, which is a great advantage especially on city tours.
That’s why buses are welcome around Lake Constance. Many destinations offer their own parking spaces in central locations:
Lindau
Buses are only allowed to stop on the island for 15 minutes, but there are plenty of parking spaces on the mainland.
Constance
Buses are allowed to park close to the city centre (Döbeleplatz), but there are also six free parking spaces directly at SEA LIFE Konstanz.
Bregenz
The largest city in Vorarlberg is a popular tourist destination – and provides four bus parking spaces in the city area despite limited space. Tip: The “Parkplatz Ost” is the best address for visitors to the Festival.
St. Gallen
You can get on and off the bus centrally in Lagergasse. Free parking for buses is available in Museumsstraße and at Spelteriniplatz.
Vaduz
Only boarding and alighting is permitted at the bus terminal in the centre of Vaduz. A bus car park is located at the Rheinpark Stadium.
By plane: Fast and central
If the distance to your holiday by the lake is particularly long, the fastest and easiest way to get to your destination is by plane. The Bodensee Airport in Friedrichshafen and Altenrhein Airport on the Swiss side are built very close to the water. From Memmingen, too, you can reach the lake in just over an hour. The airports in Zurich, Stuttgart and Munich are further away, but offer connections all over the world. We will be happy to take care of a smooth transfer to your destination on Lake Constance.
